Stony Plain Horticultural Society
Interested gardeners started meeting in September of 1964 and the Stony Plain Horticultural Society (SPHS) was officially established in 1972. The group meets monthly with the exception of July, August, December and January. Most meetings have an educational component with a guest speaker or a tour to a horticultural facility. Over the years the SPHS has been involved in Bench Shows, Seedy Saturdays, Farmers Day parades, garden tours, and gardening classes at the Stony Plain Library. In addition, the Society holds an annual plant sale in late May of each year. Members donate their extra seedlings to the sale, which is a significant fund raiser for the society.
Stony Plain and the surrounding area have a rich history in agriculture. The Society has always strived to give back to the community and over the years has helped with gardens at the Pioneer Museum, Whispering Waters, Westview Hospital, Stony Plain Library and Saint Matthews Lutheran Church. The purpose of SPHS has always been to promote an appreciation of horticulture and to encourage gardening in the greater Parkland County area. With our bursary we are pleased to be able to help one deserving student annually to pursue their career in horticulture.
We are a community of plant people who are passionate about nature and our gardens. We enjoy sharing our expertise and experience and encouraging new gardeners to pursue their garden dreams.
